Welcome To CoROM Press

The College of Remote and Offshore Medicine Foundation (CoROM), based in Pretty Bay, Malta, is an internationally recognised higher education institution dedicated to advancing healthcare education and research in austere, remote, and resource-limited environments. CoROM offers accredited academic programmes ranging from undergraduate to postgraduate levels, including degrees in Remote Paramedic Practice and Austere Critical Care, alongside professional development courses in Tropical Medicine, Prolonged Field Care, Wilderness Medicine, and Maritime and Offshore Healthcare.

As part of its academic and research mission, CoROM publishes two open-access, peer-reviewed journals designed to disseminate high-impact knowledge and practical innovation relevant to healthcare professionals operating in challenging contexts:

Journal of Improvised Medicine
The Journal of Improvised Medicine (JIM) publishes original research, reviews, case studies, and field reports focused on medical innovation, improvisation, and adaptive problem-solving in austere, prehospital, and military medical settings. JIM serves as an academic platform for clinicians, researchers, and educators to share evidence-based and field-tested approaches to healthcare delivery where standard equipment, pharmaceuticals, or infrastructure are unavailable.

The Compass Journal
The Compass Journal is CoROM’s multidisciplinary publication dedicated to global health, remote practice, and medical education in frontier environments. It welcomes scholarly and reflective contributions that explore the intersection of medicine, ethics, leadership, and resilience in contexts ranging from humanitarian and expedition medicine to conflict and disaster response. The journal’s aim is to orient the reader - like a compass - towards best practice, innovation, and integrity in the service of global healthcare.

Both journals are published by the College of Remote and Offshore Medicine Foundation and adhere to international standards for open-access scholarly publishing. They reflect the College’s commitment to advancing the science and practice of medicine beyond the hospital, promoting collaboration among clinicians, researchers, and educators working at the edge of practice.
